As the spring flowers finally start to open and with an Easter Bank Holiday looming, you might be forgiven for believing that it was now our time to emerge from Winter and say hello to Spring. However, if the forecast is anything to go by, then perhaps we'll have to delay our 'welcomes' just a little longer as the weather summary reads "a cold, wet week for all; a wintry one for some". On the bright side however, for those concerned about the impact this depressingly long winter is having on our energy use, you'll be pleased to know that the switch over to British Summer Time is likely to offset the possible increase in energy demand caused by the damp and cold days this week. There are those that advocate that we should even push the clocks forward 2 hours in Summer and 1 hour the remaining part of the year leading to a reduction in energy use and fuel bills with an estimated cut of 1.2millon tonnes of carbon annually without reducing GDP. It sounds to good to be true but the figures reported in a Cambridge University study in 2007 are supported by others including National Grid. Who would have thought that our clocks could be such powerful weapons in the fight against climate change.
