Even though the power wholesale market is following the falls seen in gas (Winter 09 Baseload closed the week down £0.20MWh at £38.70), and is now at levels where supplier tariffs must be under pressure, any tariff reduction announcements are unlikely to be made anytime soon. Suppliers have demonstrated to Ofgem that they are still nursing heavy losses from low demand last year, high imbalance charges and credit failures with some large industrials failing to pay. Some residential customers are also still in arrears. Despite all these valid arguments there is growing evidence that competition in the UK Power market is failing.
