The development of 3.92GW of power plant capacity was given the green light yesterday by the Department for Energy & Climate Change. RWE npower intends to build a 2GW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) in Pembroke, South Wales; Centrica a 1.02GW CCGT at its existing Kings' Lynn site in Norfolk and Powerfuel plan to build a 900MW Integrated gasification combined cycle in Hatfield. While RWE npower intends to start building the £1bn project shortly, it seems that the Centrica build is less certain with the company suggesting that it is still early days in the projects development. The ICGT project will start life as an 800MW gas fired power station to be built at the Hatfield colliery in Yorkshire. Construction is due to start this June and be completed by 2012. Work will then commence to convert the plant to an ICGT - this will enable the gasification of coal, with pre-combustion carbon capture & storage to form a synthetic gas with near-zero emissions. This phase is expected to be completed by 2014.
