New EU regulation on SO2 and NO2 could cause brown outs

03 June 2008

Regulatory bodies sometimes fail to think about the long term prospects.

The EU is looking to bring in new regulation to cap the amount of pollutants in the air. This is not that surprising but it is looking to levy this on the power sector. Given that the older smellier plant were given a reprieve until 2015 and their running hours were capped under the LCPD, this new regulation could cause them to close prematurely. The collapse in capacity so soon, will mean that new build will not be there to replace the existing plant.
