A giant battery to store electricity produced by wind farms and distributed microgeneration is being developed by Eon UK - sponsored by DBERR - the company announced on Wednesday. The battery would help overcome issues associated with renewable power production such as intermittency, i.e. turbines only generating energy when the wind blows. The company’s technology centre in Nottingham, UK is conducting tests on smaller batteries and expects to produce and install a prototype at the centre — capable of storing 1 MW for four hours — by autumn 2009. This prototype would be the size of four articulated lorries.
