Coal makes a reappearance

08 June 2007

Coal is still the dominant fuel type for new build projects but as prices start to rise some projects may look less appealing.

Npower have recently announced that they are seeking planning permission for a new super-coal plant at Blyth. This sight has been with National Power for some time and they closed the last turbine their in 2001. But given its location to the sea and the potential for carbon capture the sight was a prime location for a new power station. Furthermore, Npower plan to be able to fit it with 10% biofuel capacity, they would also look to re-open the train route for the power station. Planning would be submitted in 2008 building in 2009 and it would be fully commissioned by 2010. Coal prices have recently risen to $75/tonne and this is having an interesting effect on fuel dynamics. It means that the gas price is becoming more marginal, at a time when coal is the dominant new build fuel type. It clearly pays to have a portfolio and to manage the swings in fuel prices.
