A case of rumour and counter rumour

18 January 2007

Market gains eroded as players realise that it is not going to be as cold as was predicted.

The market fell back yesterday on news that the cold snap whilst bad would be short-lived. In reality this is classic buy the rumour sell the fact. It is clear that there is risk premia associated with buying forward and that traders are looking to extract value out of the curve by buying or selling this risk premia on what they believe, as more and more fact comes out their views change accordingly.

Summer 07 and 08 were sold down yesterday as traders took a view that they are being supported on where people percieve the market should be relative to the prompt. If it is warm (as opposed to hot) in the Summer then we could be in for a low Summer and some are saying that the gas and power risk premia for buying forward is a little high.
