Renewables must be encouraged and although they are expensive they could be a good long term solution.
There is no doubt that the market feels a self satisfied moral and ethical obligation to implement renewables. New projects seem to be all the rage with Airtricity setting up a large wind farm and the first proper tidal power project being devloped in the Orkney.
It is fair to say that the governments target of 10% renewables by 2010 is a good aspiration unlikely to be achieved. They are also trying very hard to develop nuclear power and the truth is that if they fill the gap which currently exists in replacing supply, then it becomes increasingly more difficult to justify building renewables, which still have very high development costs.
So will renewables be the panacea, probably not, and government policy is pushing things the wrong way.
