Windfarms: Talking to the Experts

14 September 2006

There are number of possible Windfarm projects floating around but are these projects based on the right components. Is there such a thing as too many experts!

There are number of possible Windfarm projects floating around. The projects effectively state that the electricity produced is for free. The turbines are erected on-site and the financing is done by payments to the developer at a fixed price over a ten year period. The economics tend to stack up if you consider PR revenues, and the lease arrangements with the windfarm provider. But Powerisk can’t help but feel that the financing of windfarms could be much cheaper through a bank, given they are financing experts; that the spill contract might be better with a distributor, given they are electricity distributor experts; and perhaps a supply contract on a floating basis with an electricity supplier. The advantages of having three or four different counterparties will far outweigh the revenue given up from dealing with one generic provider (who is probably not an expert in anything other than the physical erection of the turbine). Finally, a deal which makes money at the start is not always a deal which is making you money at the end. As a result, it might be worth looking at the risk, and maybe even talking to a risk expert!
