A time for reflection Weather or not it outturned

09 February 2006

Could it be a lack of water which is causing some bullish elements to return to the Summer, possibly but it is not a major fundamental and the bears will win through.

The cold winter appears not to have materialised in the UK. The South has below average temperatures and the North has had above average temperatures. In fact in could be said that this winter has been distinctly average. In reality this is almost like having a low winter because the previous winters have been so mild. The key is the future and Europe and the UK are having exceptionally dry Winters. This has a major effect on the hydro system, particularly those that are more reliant on hydro, such as Spain. The net result is that they will end up buying in power (importing) probably from the French. This in turn decreases the chances of imports coming to the UK, and if anything the interconnector maybe flowing into France. The interconnector is small, and so the market is not rushing to go and buy under immense bullishish pressure, but it maybe one reason why the Summer has not fallen to the same way as the Winter.
