Pressures somewhat contradictory

05 April 2006

Winter 06 not sure which tune to dance to the Sparkers or the fundamentalists.

We have seen recently a slide off on Winter 06 moving from £71.50 to trade at around £70. This is mainly on falling oil prices and gas prices. However the cotradictory pressure is that whilst gas prices have fallen the spark spread remains cheap in comparison to other seasons with Summer 08 spark at £14.99 and the Winter 06 at £10.00. This suggests that the out and out power players are looking to sell power on the back of fundamentals but the sparkers are looking to leg in and buy it against the gas. Perhaps this explains why the market has been very tight, and players have traded it more frequently there are equal numbers of buyers and sellers. Who knows. For certain it looks high at the moment and with the gas system naturally long, the prompt could well bring it all down.
