Bears return after bull thrash

24 October 2005

Mild weather and plant availability pressure gas and power prices downwards.

Last week saw a slight return to bullish activity. But this morning the weekend having been mild, pushed traders into a more bearish mood, the market saw day ahead and Week 44 plummet on more plant availability and mild weather. The effects of this are a double whammy, as there is less requirement for gas plant (because more coal plant is available) and the demand for gas is less as fewer residents and industrialist require gas to heat homes. This is putting further pressure on the spark spread which is getting heavily sold where the numbers look high. Winter 06 has been guilty of a slight drop for these very reasons. Perhaps surprisingly the emissions also fell, but there are some fundamental fears in this market which are not materialising and this means that the Polish National Allocation plan and the spate of opening registries is causing stability in this market.
