Buying Forward may not be at the best price

06 May 2005

Sleeping easy but at what price.

The UK power market is generally in contango the front end is cheaper than the back (accounting for seasonality). This would in theory cause buyers to wait to the death before they cover their positions. In reality players are so scared of power volatility that the finance directors and power suppliers are asking and encouraging purchasers to buy on a forward basis. The result is a hedge allowing all to sleep more easily at night but how much is this costing in comparison to leaving a position unhedged.
