Prospect of cold run up to Christmas keeps prices high

14 December 2005

Gas, emissions demand and power all up on fundamentals driven by the cold snap.

Powerisk has for a number of weeks been stressing that whilst supply fundamentals are important they tend to be short lived (mainly because the suppliers can do something about it) but the demand fundamentals are more serious. NBP gas prices and UK power prices pushed up a little yesterday, this was mainly because demand fundamentals suggest that with the run up to Christmas it is going to get a little colder and that demand will increase. Supply will be able to cope with this as ships arrive at the Isle of Grain and plant availability remains good, but if demand pushes up further then suppliers will have to go to market and the recent rises are buying some of this potential increase early. The price is now ultra sensitive to any changes in fundamentals. The final bullish fundamental is the increase in emissions prices which rose 0.5cents. The emissions curve also went into contango this is its natural state as players tend to roll their short positions forward.

CRC- What Price?

03 February 2012

In November it was reported that traders in the UK energy markets were beginning to place bets that the Government will not go ahead with its controversial Carbon Floor Price. The Carbon Floor Price has relevance to the CRC, not least because some commentators have suggested that the fixed price levels could track the known Carbon Floor Price. Current EUA prices also seem vastly at odds to the proposed CRC price. British business is lobbying hard for a level and competitive playing field.  read more...
